My Friends Arrive/A Trip to the Lake

So much happened in the week before everyone arrived from England and we've been so busy (and tired) since they left that I've had no time to blog. I must have had 4 or 5 people ask me where the pictures were! We had such a great time that I didn't take too many photos. Also I have no idea what has happened to the blog template, I can't type where I want to so the photos and text are all over the place and driving me MAD!!

Jaden and Kirsten were so tired from a fun week at their Mom's that they slept until about 10am everyday, except for the Thursday before Shelley arrived - that was cookie baking day!! I'd hoped to only have two helpers, but Jaden and Kirsten were both up at 7am with Nicolas and Adison and ready to help!

We made dozens for cookies, a couple of cakes and then I felt I was ready for everyone to arrive. I spent Friday doing what I hoped would be a quick flick around dusting, but what I realized was there were milk spatters all over my house - the joys of sippy cups that flirt milk everywhere. I don't normally inspect my surfaces that closely except when we have guests, so it took an hour or so of cleaning to get rid of most of them, not that Shelley etc really cared.

I met everyone at the airport (my wonderful friend Katrina looked after Nicolas and Adison for me) and unfortunatly they chose the weekend when we had a heat advisory in place. It was 104 degrees (36 degrees C) when I picked them up and everyone was in jeans!!
Lianne thought her bag was lost, but luckily it came through eventually and we got home and had a glass of wine. We were overwhelmed with presents and Nicolas was (and still is) very proud of his first pair of big boy boxer shorts.

We hoped that the kids would sleep until about 6am but no such luck. Nicolas and Adison were in the same room for the first time and they woke me up with a blood curdling scream about 5am. Nicolas had woken up in the dark and screamed, which made Adison scream. I realized that everyone else was already awake - Jake woke Shelley up at 3am and Lianne and Gayle woke up a bit later. Jamie was trying to sleep on the couch in the living room with out much success. We decided just to get up, have breakfast and get to the lake early so it wouldn't be too hot.

Jamie tried water skiing while some of us hung out and relaxed by the dock and then Stephanie took us girls out on the tube.

Lianne and Adison relax on the boat.

Jamie gets ready to ski

After several attempts he made it up but didn't get too far. I was impressed that he stood up as it took me about 5 day's of trying.

Woody was then brave (or crazy) enough to let Adam and Jamie take the boat out again so Jamie could take a turn driving it.

It was hot but not too bad and the lake was really warm, so we just hung out in the water most of the time.

When Adam and Jamie got back Jamie proved he was a real man and jumped about 30 feet into the water off the next door dock. It doesn't look that high, but it is. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the terrified look on his face as he went down, but it would have made a great photo!

I've never been in a tube before, I saw too many people injured in Spain and Greece when I was on holiday years ago. Much as I love Woody and Adam, I wouldn't trust either of them not to try to get me to go so fast I'd fall out of the tube. I do trust Stephanie totally, especially when I have Nicolas in the tube with me. We went VERY slowly, but I enjoyed it.

Gayle went next and was much braver than me and went really fast. She was just smiling all the time.

The bravest one of all was Lianne who was going so fast she jumped the wake and ended up going way outside the line of the boat and getting knocked all over the place. She still really enjoyed it until she saw the bruise on her bum the next day!!

Adam, Woody and Jamie went tubing while we took the exhausted kids back to Woody and Stephanie's to order pizza. Having been up for about 12 hours already Jake was so tired, as was everyone else. The kids did so well and after pizza and Stephanie's wonderful peach cobbler we left for home about 2pm to get ready for the party in the evening.
The kids fell asleep in the car and didn't even wake up when I put them in bed. When we tried to wake them after an hour it was nearly impossible. Everyone else had a sleep while I got ready for everyone arriving.

A trip to the Fire Station

We were coming out of the grocery store a few weeks ago when a fire truck pulled up. Nicolas was beside himself with excitement and the fire fighters came over, gave the kids stickers and said we could come by the station anytime we wanted and if they weren't busy, they would give us a tour. As soon as swim team was over and we had time to do things again, we stopped by.

Fireman Fred (his real name) took us all around the fire station and explained what all the equipment was and how the station worked.
What I find very reassuring about America is that there are fire stations EVERYWHERE!! There must be about six or seven within about five or six miles of here. Also ambulances are dispatched from the fire stations, not the hospitals, so I always feel that if anything happened there would be emergency services with me in minutes.

The thought of an ambulance getting through rush hour traffic from Stepping Hill was never very reassuring! I always felt I'd have blead to death by the time it made it!!

They put the lights on for the kids and we were there for about 30 minutes. I learned alot and Nicolas asked questions no stop, so I think the kids enjoyed it too.

Pond Weed and Duck Pooh!!

Yesterday I thought it would be fun to take the kids to paddle in the lake at Tribble Mill. Unfortunately I didn't realize the lake was covered in pond weed and the bank was covered in goose pooh! The geese were also very mean and travelling in big flocks! We found a less poohy place with no pond weed and paddled for about 1/2 an hour and then the geese found us!

The kids did have fun on the playset, so the trip wasn't a complete right off, but we have definitely had better visits to the park!

Swim Team Party

On Monday night with was the end of season party for the swim team. This season went very quickly and I'm excited for next year to have Nicolas swimming. He swam a width of the swim team pool on Monday night so if we can get his stamina up, he could be swimming a length in no time. I would definitely be the Mom crying with happiness to see her baby compete!
I was terrified that Nicolas would get his lip bumped as there were so many kids in the pool, but he did ok.
All the kids over dosed on cake, candy and cookies! They even got to drink sprite as I felt it couldn't be any worse that the rest of the sugar they had consumed!

Kirsten's team won the inner tube relay, she's light enough that having her in the tube didn't slow them down!
Adison had her first sour candy thanks to Kirsten. She of course loved it!

Nicolas showed Adam his fearless jumping skills. It's amazing how far he's come with his confidence in just a few weeks.

I missed the kids being presented with their trophies as the little ones were tired and ready for bed. Adam stayed and watched and was very proud of them.

Jaden didn't wear his goggles with is why his eyes look so red!

I'm glad it's over with but I will miss seeing my friends each day. Part of me hopes Jaden will do year round swimming, but then the realistic part of me knows that we will be at the pool every night for a couple of hours and I don't think I'm ready for that, even if he is!!

The River at Ronald Reagan Park

They did a whole project over winter to make the river at our local park much more accessible for the kids. We have wanted to go there for ages, but with swim team we never had the time. We went there on Monday as I wanted to do something each day with the kids that was fun.

It was nice and relaxing but we went just before lunch so after about an hour the kids were all hungry.

Nicolas is running up the river bank with a bag of cookies so he won't have to share with Adison!! We'll definately go back there and Kirsten is even saying she wants her birthday party there, but I'm not sure how easy that would be.

Berkeley's 2nd Birthday

Berkeley was supposed to be born a couple of day's after Adison but they ended up being a week or so apart. We haven't celebrated Adison's birthday yet so it was fun for her to still get to be involved in a birthday party.
The kids covered a picture frame with pasta and pretzels and then it was sprayed gold. Both of them still tried to eat the pretzels when they had been sprayed!!

There were lots of things for them to climb on and thankfully not enough kids to damage Nicolas' lip.

The birthday girl and her Daddy, Brian.

It was fun to see my friend Caroline again as we hardly see each other now as she works and I'm so busy with all the stuff with Jaden and Kirsten.
